Contents of the Horse Hair Trunk

It is right after the Civil War, Henry Jones gave $700 to his son, John W. Jones {1828-1920 married Elizabeth Ann Wheeler ~1841-1923, daughter of Capt. John Madison Wheeler (1815-1913} and Sarah Leah Ann Paul (1817-1875)).

Like many farmers in SMC after the Civil War, they fell on hard times. Interesting that Henry required collateral. Sarah was a younger sister of Lovey Cannon Paul (1808- 1887}, the grandmother of Mildred Foxwell Jones (1890-1980, who in 1911 married Henry Jones’ grandson, Stephen M. Jones, son of Judge Stephen Jones).

John Worthington Jones’ brother, James Jones married Sarah’s first cousin, Mary Elizabeth “Eliza” Foxwell, the daughter of Shadrack Foxwell and Mary Ann Paul, sister of both Sarah and Lovey.

In summary, three of the Paul sisters had descendants that married into the family of Henry Jones: James Jones married Mary Elizabeth “Eliza” Foxwell in 1856, dau of Mary Ann Paul and Shadrack Foxwell John Worthington Jones married Elizabeth Ann Wheeler in 1856, dau of Sarah Leah Ann Paul and Capt. John Madison Wheeler. These two marriages between first cousins and brothers occurred the same year.

Stephen M. Jones married Mildred Foxwell in 1911, granddaughter of Lovey Cannon Paul and Stephen Foxwell and daughter of Thomas F. Foxwell and Rachel Sanner

The Sanner connections were:
Nancy Thomas uNannie” Jones, daughter of John W. Jones and Elizabeth Ann Wheeler, married Richard Baxter Sanner prior to 1871, brother of Rachel Sanner and son of Abel and Serena Ann Sanner

Stephen M. Jones married Mildred Foxwell in 1911, daughter of Thomas F. Foxwell and Rachel Sanner, daughter of Abel Sanner and Serena Ann Sanner (her maiden name and distant cousin}

Thomas Raymond Dixon (1894-1957} son of Lydia M. Jones (1871-1948) who was the granddaughter of Henry Jones and the daughter of Judge Stephen Jones and his second wife, Chloe Posey and Lydia’s husband, Joseph Thomas Dixon (1866-1908) married Mary Serena Fish (1895-1978 THE CUSTODIAN OF THIS HORSE HAIR TRUNK) daughter of Catherine Eudora Sanner (1857-1939 the sister of Rachel Ruth Sanner and the daughter of Abel and Serena Sanner) and her husband, Edward Johns Fish.
